Cashmere
Cashmere is a 100% natural and biodegradable fibre that comes from cashmere goats. Mongolia has extreme winters reaching -50ºC, which makes the animals grow thick and warm furs. The soft hair of the undercoat of goats is used to create one of nature's finest wool: cashmere.
Why is cashmere more expensive than other materials?
High quality cashmere depends on a number factors and Mongolian cashmere is considered the best in the world. As with any wool, it starts with the environment and genetic traits of the animal. Cashmere goats only live in cold, high-altitude places like Mongolia. After the winter, the goats are hand-combed during the spring molting season when they no longer have use of their soft cashmere undercoats. The fibres of the undercoat must be separated from a coarser protective top coat. This is a labour-intensive process that typically involves combing and sorting the hair by hand. Did you know that it takes about five goats to make one sweater? These factors contribute to the relatively low global production rate of cashmere and its premium price.
Yak wool
Yaks are long-haired domesticated gentle bovids that roam the Mongolian mountains and steppes and provide the warmest, breathable natural fibre. Yak wool is one of the nature's most sustainable and rare wool. Same as goats, yaks also grow a thick shaggy fur during the winter, and it is hand-combed in late spring. Yak wool is as soft as cashmere, lustrous and very warm.
Camel Wool
The majestic two-humped Bactrian Camels mostly live in the Gobi desert in Mongolia. After Mongolian cold winters (yes, there is winter in the desert too), they grow a thick, long fur. As with goats and yaks, camel fur is gently hand-combed and goes in to multiple steps to become the products you see on our website. Bactrian camel wool is known for its warmth and lightweight properties. These camels can go months without drinking water, and besides their wool, they have been providing transportation and milk for Mongolian nomads for centuries. We are also very happy to bring this rare and natural fibre to Europe.
